Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs, plus how long it takes to read or say out loud. Your text stays in your browser.

How it works

How it counts

A word is a run of letters or numbers, so “well-known” and “it’s” each count as one. Sentences are counted by ending punctuation or a line break, so abbreviations like “e.g.” can add to the count.

Reading time assumes 238 words a minute and speaking time assumes 150. Word and Google Docs can differ slightly because they split words differently.

Questions

Before you start.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 double-spaced, in a 12-point font. Margins and font change this.

How long does a 500-word speech take?

About 3 to 4 minutes at a typical 150 words a minute.

Do you save or upload my text?

No. The counting happens in your browser and your text isn’t sent anywhere or stored.

Does it count words in other languages?

Yes for languages that put spaces between words. Languages like Chinese and Japanese don’t use spaces, so the word count won’t be meaningful there.
