How it works
Before you hand it in
A citation generator can only format what you give it. Check the author names, dates and capitalization against the source, and against your instructor’s rules, before you submit.
APA 7 is common in social sciences, MLA 9 in the humanities and Chicago 18 in history. The Chicago format here is the bibliography entry with an author-date in-text form.

Questions
Before you start.
Which citation style should I use?
Use the one your instructor or journal asks for. If nobody says, check the syllabus or ask, because switching later means redoing every citation.
What if my source has no author or no date?
Leave those fields empty. The title moves to the front and APA shows “n.d.” for a missing date. Look for an organization name first, since it can count as the author.
Do I need to include URLs?
For websites, yes. For journal articles, use the DOI when there is one. MLA drops the https:// from website links, and this generator does that for you.
Will the italics paste into Word or Google Docs?
Yes, in current browsers. Copy citation keeps the italics when you paste. If your editor loses them, italicize the title by hand.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The citation is built in your browser and what you type isn’t stored.
